Recap Of Obama's 60 MINUTES Interview
* 55/45 situation, could not say definitely that bin Laden was there … if he’d been a wealthy prince from Dubai, then we’ve got problems geopolitically.
* My no 1 concern is can they get in and get out.
* (reported that there was disagreement in the West Wing) One thing we’ve done is build a team where everyone speaks their mind, one where there’s not a lot of backbiting after the fact.
* The fact that some voiced doubts is invaluable, so the plan’s sharper, we thought through options, when making the decision we’re making it with the best information.
* (past failures weighing in) You think about Black Hawk down, the Iranian rescue, I’m very sympathetic for other presidents where they make the best call, these are tough complicated decisions.
* The day before I was thinking about this quite a bit, and concluded it was worth it because we had devoted enormous blood and and treasure in fighting back since 9/11.
* Vast majority of most senior aides didn’t know…during the weekend this was weighing on me.
* It was the longest 40 minutes of my life, except maybe when Sasha had meningitis when she was 4 months old.
* I was relieved and I wanted to make sure those guys got over the Pakistan border and landed safely and deeply proud and satisfied with my team.
* (photo) We don’t trot out this stuff as trophies, he was deserving of the justice he received, we don’t need to spike the football.
* There’s no doubt bin Laden is dead, no doubt among al Qaeda members he’s dead, won’t see him walking on this earth again.
*(burial) What we tried to do was consulting with experts in Islamic law and ritual was find something appropriately respectful of the body - we took more care of this than bin Laden when he killed 3,000 people, he didn’t care how they were treated, that’s something that makes us different.
* (first thing you did) I think I walked up with the team and just said “we got him.”
* It was a moment of great pride for me to see our capacity as a nation to execute something this difficult this well.
* (not telling Pakistan) If Im not revealing it to my closest aides, I’m sure as heck not going to reveal it to people I don’t know.
* I think there had to be some sort of support network for bin Laden in Pakistan, don’t know who or what it was, in or out of government.
* That’s something we have to investigate, and more importantly, the Pakistani government has to investigate.
* As nervous as I was, one thing I didn’t lose sleep over was the possibility of taking bin Laden out.
* Justice was done; anyone who would question the perpetrator of mass murder on American soil didn’t deserve what he got needs to have their head examined.
