Severe Weather Claims At Least 297 Lives
Severe weather has killed at least 297 people through six states in the South.
The bulk of these fatalities, 210, have occurred in Alabama, where President Obama is scheduled to visit today.
FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate is already on the ground in the state to help coordinate the federal response to the crisis.
President Barack Obama authorized the use of federal funds for the recovery effort earlier this week. According to the White House, the federal response can include “grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.”
Mississippi has reported 33 casualties and Tennessee has confirmed 34. According to the AP, there have also been 15 fatalities in Georgia, 5 in Virginia and 1 in Kentucky.
