Poll: Americans Credit Obama, Dems For Avoiding Shutdown

More Americans credit President Barack Obama and Congressional Democrats for avoiding a government shutdown than Republican lawmakers, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll.

The data, compiled between April 9-10th, states that 48 percent would credit “Obama/Democrats in Congress” for the agreement to continue funding the government, whereas only 35 percent would attribute the move to Republicans. 11 percent said both deserve equal credit, 3 percent said “neither” and an additional 3 percent had no opinion.

In addition, 58 percent of those polled said they favored the compromise, as opposed to 38 percent who disagreed with it. 5 percent remained unsure. 

The agreement, which emerged late Friday evening, came just hours before a shutdown would have gone into effect. The stopgap measure ensures government operations through this Thursday. In the meantime, Congressional leaders and the White House are expected to hammer out the final details of a plan to provide funding for the remainder of the year, but also come in at $78.5 billion less than the White House initially requested for 2011.

Other high-profile budget battles remain on the horizon, including funding for 2012 and a measure to raise the debt limit.
