NATO Approaching Full Take Over Of Libyan Mission
NATO announced Sunday that they will be taking full command of the ongoing mission in Libya, including the protection of Libyan civilians.
“Our goal is to protect civilians and civilian-populated areas under threat of attack from the Gaddafi regime,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a statement. “NATO will implement all aspects of the UN Resolution. Nothing more, nothing less.”
Added Rasmussen, “This is a very significant step, which proves NATO’s capability to take decisive action.”
The announcement comes on the heels of the military alliance’s decision to take over the enforcement of the no-fly zone over Libya last week.
According to Reuters, NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu has said that the transition will take place within the next few days.
The international conversation over the mission in Libya will continue this week during a conference this Tuesday in London.
