DeMint Pushes For Balanced Budget Before Debt Increase

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) urged Congress to hold off on increasing the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling, at least until a constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds majority approval for any tax increase is passed.

“A balanced budget amendment is sorely needed now because the debt is rising bigger and faster than it ever has,” DeMint said in a USA Today Op-Ed. “If we do not confront this now, we are choosing to bury our children and grandchildren in debt.”

DeMint labeled another debt ceiling increase, the fourth time since President Obama began his term and the tenth time in the past decade, as “catastrophic” and said it “is a ruinous economic strategy.”

The South Carolina Republican blasted the president and Democrats saying they “are ignoring the warnings and are calling for new spending under the euphemism of ‘investments’.”

“Congress must balance the budget now. Or, it will bust,” DeMint said.
