White House Backs Letting States Opt-Out Of Obamacare Requirements Earlier
President Barack Obama announced Monday that he supports legislation that would allow states to opt-out of the controversial provisions in the health care reform law by 2014.
“I think that’s a reasonable proposal,” Obama told a bipartisan collection of governors at the White House. “I will go to bat for whatever works, no matter who or where it comes from.”
As it stands, states would only be allowed to drop opt-out in 2017 if they can provide an economically acceptable alternative. The legislation to move the date up comes from Senators Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Scott Brown (R-Mass.).
The law has come under scrutiny since its passage, with legal challenges taking place in more than 20 states.
