OPINION: Doing It To Ourselves
More and more Americans recognize a plain and simple truth about slow economic growth. The truth is that we’re doing it to ourselves.
The CEO of McDonald’s, Jim Skinner, is the latest to sound that theme—but he’s not alone. Skinner notes that American companies pay some of the highest taxes in the world. With a global economy they send the jobs where it’s most affordable, and then ship products to America that are made someplace else. That also avoids a nightmare of hodgepodge regulations that U.S. businesses face.
Skinner notes that big regulations mean big government, which requires big taxes and still runs big deficits.
We obviously have to choose between more jobs or more government. That ought to be a no-brainer with unemployment so high. We need more jobs and less government.
