OPINION: Black Friday Beats Occupiers
The Occupy movement tried to turn Black Friday into “Don’t Buy Anything Day,” claiming that shopping just helps corporate greed.
They failed. Two-thirds of the U.S. population were part of the four-day post-Thanksgiving shopping spree, spending $11-billion on Friday alone—a billion dollars higher than last year.
Online sales also jumped to almost a billion dollars on Friday.
The biggest stores were targeted by the protestors, yet the top five retailers reported double-digit sales increases over last year’s.Yet the Occupy movement leaders said they won’t give up. Their next goal is to shut down Christmas shopping at big stores, promoting a new motto of “Hit ‘em where it hurts this holiday season!”
For anyone who wonders why support for the Occupy movement is plummeting, their approach to the holidays gives you the answer.
