OPINION: Super Committee Failure

Congress’ super committee failed its assignment to propose $1.2-trillion in deficit reduction.

The effort was always just a gimmick, to provide political cover for a $2-trillion increase in federal borrowing. Now the supposed automatic cuts from defense spending and social spending may never happen, because they don’t kick in for another year.

It’s a typical ploy for Washington to promise to reduce spending in the future, while they increase spending right now. They’ve already added $35-billion more in spending than was in the budget that the House passed this spring. And what they call spending cuts just means they won’t spend as much as they were planning. So what they call a cut is often an increase from the year before.

Yes, that’s confusing. Washington plays word games to make people think they’re being responsible, when in fact they are not.

From The Heritage Foundation, I’m Ernest Istook.
