OPINION: Bishops Complain
Catholic bishops are complaining that government requires them to be tolerant, but won’t extend tolerance toward their faith.
Catholic charities each year receive hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants—but they say that’s being threatened because they oppose abortion. They contend they should not be asked to compromise their faith to take part in assistance programs. They also argue that Obamacare could force Catholic institutions to pay for contraceptives, against their religious belief.
On the state level, the bishops say their opposition to same-sex marriage was used in Illinois to end their ability to make adoption and foster-care placements, and that New York’s new law does not protect churches that disagree with same-sex marriage.
Catholics are not alone. As government dictates more and more social policy, many fear that it’s being used to deny religious liberty—a bedrock principle of America.
