OPINION: Bye Bye Pipeline Jobs

Canada wants a pipeline to ship oil to American refineries, creating thousands of U.S. jobs and giving us a supply that doesn’t come from the MidEast.

But President Obama has put the Keystone Pipeline on hold until after next year’s elections, currying favor with radical environmentalists. Angered, Canada says that now they may instead build a pipeline to the Pacific, and sell their oil to China.

The 700-thousand barrels a day would have been a major addition to our energy supply, helping hold down gasoline prices.

It would have generated over $5-billion a year in property tax revenue for six states, taking pressure off of their existing taxpayers. And it all would be done with private dollars—none of the taxpayer subsidies like for Obama’s green energy agenda.

Our problems with creating jobs and energy can be summed up in one word. It’s politics.

From The Heritage Foundation, I’m Ernest Istook.
