OPINION: UN Building Project

As bad as bureaucracy is in Washington, DC, the United Nations gives them a run for their money. Actually, it’s our money that keeps the enormous UN bureaucracy going, since American taxpayers pay more than a fifth of the UN budget.

The UN says it’s running out of space, so they plan to add another skyscraper to their headquarters in New York. They first projected a $400-million cost, but that’s not going to happen. The UN’s last big headquarters project ran more than three times the estimate.

But there’s more, because the U.S. evidently will pay New York City to replace the playground that’s on the construction site, perhaps costing another couple hundred million.

The project is in its early stages, so you may not hear about it for a while. But when you do, be prepared for sticker shock—brought to you by the United Nations.

From The Heritage Foundation, I’m Ernest Istook.
