OPINION: Environmental Progress

From The Heritage Foundation, I’m Ernest Istook.

There’s a big debate about how environmental red tape kills economic growth, stopping businesses from creating jobs.

Yet the EPA keeps promoting more and more restrictions.

What goes unnoticed are the huge improvements we’ve already made.

No American city is even in the top 50 of the most polluted cities in the world. Air quality improved 27 percent in America’s major cities in the last decade. We’re using water 30 per cent more efficiently, plus water quality has improved. Wetlands and forestation have expanded in the last 30 years.

The EPA says 92 percent of our drinking water comes from sources with zero violations reported.

Yet some activists make it sound like we’re backsliding. In fact, we’ve made a lot of environmental progress—but it doesn’t get much attention from the media.
