Obama Seeking "Orderly Transition" In Egypt

As Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak continues to stare down massive social upheaval, President Barack Obama has expressed interest in an “orderly transition” within the country.

According to a statement released by the White House, the President told a handful of foreign leaders over the weekend that he is focused on ultimately seeing Egypt adopt a government that is “responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people.”

“During his calls, the President reiterated his focus on opposing violence and calling for restraint; supporting universal rights, including the right to peaceful assembly, association, and speech,” the statement reads.

Beginning last week, a wave of protests has engulfed Egypt. President Mubarak has attempted to quell the anger by dissolving his cabinet and appointing the country’s first Vice President. However, the moves appear to have gained little traction and his future as Egypt’s leader continues to be in doubt.
