Reid: No Filibuster Reform Today

By Mario Trujillo

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has announced that the Senate will not move forward on a vote on reforming filibuster rules today.

“We don’t have the pathway yet about how to get through this. There is some significant procedural issues that we will have to get around,” Reid told reporters following a lunch with the Democratic caucus.

Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), along with 24 co-sponsors, introduced a package of reforms early this month that would eliminate secret holds, cut the filibuster out of the motion to proceed and institute a “talking filibuster” that would force senators to actually hold the floor for a filibuster.

Instead, Sen. Reid said a package is being worked out with Rules Committee Chairman Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the ranking member.

“The next 24-48 hours we’ll have a way of completing this work,” Reid said.
