Former GOP Leader Frist Against Repealing Health Care Reform
By Rachel Whitt
Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) is against his party’s push to repeal the health care reform law.
“It is not the bill that I would have drafted,” Frist said Tuesday during an appearance at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. “But it is the law of the land and it is the platform, the fundamental platform, upon which all future efforts to make that system better, for that patient, for that family, will be based.”
A graduate of Harvard Medical Center, Frist worked as a transplant surgeon before entering the political arena. He said his opinion on Federal Health Care is based on his experiences in the medical field, and his knowledge of insurance companies. He served as the Republican Senate Majority Leader from 2003-2007.
Frist commented on the repeal alongside former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD.) and former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. The trio are cooperating on a project aimed at helping states implement policy changes taking place under health care reform.
The House of Representatives is set to debate the repeal of the law on Tuesday.
