GOP'er Pete King Wants Bill To Ban Guns Within 1,000 Feet Of Gov Officials

In the wake of the tragic shooting in Tucson this Saturday, Republican Representative Peter King (N.Y.) is introducing a bill that would bar the possession of a firearm within 1,000 feet of certain government officials.

The announcement comes via a statement released by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, an organization spearheaded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“In the United States, it is illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a school. Passing a similar law for government officials would give federal, state, and local law enforcement a better chance to intercept would-be shooters before they pull the trigger,” the statement reads.

The 1,000 feet rule would apply to members of Congress as well as the President, Vice President and Federal Judges.

King is the chair of the House Homeland Security Committee.

The shooting in Tucson, which left a Congresswoman in critical condition and six others dead, has brought the issue of congressional security to the forefront.
