President, First Lady Hold Moment Of Silence For Tucson Victims
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama held a moment of silence Monday for the victims of Saturday’s tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona.
Donned in winter coats, the Obamas emerged from the White House’s South Portico and bowed their heads somberly for a little over a minute. They then silently returned to the executive mansion.
The two were flanked on both sides by more than a hundred staffers, including adviser David Axelrod and recently appointed National Economics Council Director Gene Sperling.
The moment of reflection coincides with a series of other gestures marking the incident. The House has suspended the bulk of their legislative activity and President Obama ordered all flags on public grounds to be flown at half mast until sunset Friday.
Saturday’s shootings left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in serious condition and six others dead, including a Federal Judge, a staffer and a nine year old girl. Suspect Jared Lee Loughner is in custody and facing five federal counts.
