Chicago Mayor Will Not Run For Another Term
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley announced today that he will not be running for another term as mayor. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Daley said his decision to end his run as mayor “just feels right.”
“In the coming days I know there will be some reflecting on my time as mayor,” Daley said. “I have always believed that every person, especially public officials, must understand when it is time to move on. For me, that time is now.”
Daley has been the mayor of the Windy City since 1989 and on December 26, he will become the city’s longest-serving mayor, surpassing the 21-year eight month tenure held by his father, Richard J. Daley.
Earlier this year, White House adviser Rahm Emanuel speculated about running for the position but made clear that he would not run against Daley.
The White House on Tuesday released the following statement praising Daley for his many years in office,
“No mayor in America has loved a city more or served a community with greater passion than Rich Daley. He helped build Chicago’s image as a world class city, and leaves a legacy of progress that will be appreciated for generations to come.”
