Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Wednesday that BP will be held accountable for the salaries of workers laid off during the administration's six month moratorium on drilling for new deepwater oil wells.

"The law is very clear, BP is a responsible party. They are responsible with respect to dealing with the oil spill, they are responsible for dealing with all the damages that flow from the oil spill, [and] they are responsible for compensating those that are damaged from the oil spill," Salazar said.

"It's a dynamic relationship, but it is a directive relationship between the United States and BP," he added.

I recently was offered a job with Halliburton and was told I would start on May 31,2010. I put in my two weeks notice with my previous employer on May 14, 2010, and my last working day there was May 28, 2010. I called Halliburton about the May 31, 2010 start date and they said they were working on it. Tuesday June 1, 2010 Halliburton told me that due to the unforseen oil moratorium They would have to rescind their offer. Now I am out of a well paying job, not to mention the benefits. I filed a claim with BP and drove to the claims office in Pensacola, FL. BP officials told me that they would keep the file open but could not pay me for the lost working hours at this time because the Federal Government set the Moratorium not BP. BP is directly responsible for the Moratorium in my opinion and should have to compensate for all lost working hours and benifits for that matter. Should BP have to pay?
