Doubts

We all have doubts. Even when we are pretty certain of a specific outcome there is a twinge of doubt. When I took the stress test last week I was fine until the Dr. said “I have to caution you that there is a remote possibility that you could have a heart attack and thus while hooked up to an IV and electrodes I was asked to sign a consent form I couldn’t read.” I had a twinge of doubt. Much like playing Texas and even though ahead with less than a minute to go I always had doubts.

Doubts are overcome by faith, but often that faith is reflected in the actions of others. A get well card from a stranger, a prayer blanket from a congregation I have never met, a prayer that penetrates the “Force” and finds its way into my heart. Faith surrounds me with the little acts of kindness that reinforce the giver’s belief that “all will be well.” Simple acts like the delivery of lemonade, an offhand comment such as “next visit we will go to a ball game,” or a question that is about my future reflects the giver’s faith that becomes contagious. Soon I believe, and my faith overcomes the inertia of doubt.

When we find ourselves stagnated by doubt, look to the little signs of faith. They surround each and every one of us
