White House Expecting BP Cooperation On Escrow Proposal

The White House is expecting BP’s cooperation with the administration’s proposal to set up a large escrow account to handle claims filed in the wake of the colossal oil spill off the Gulf Coast.

Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton told reporters aboard Air Force One Monday that the oil giant has assured the White House that they will not fight the request. Although the White House has not indicated how large the administration believes the account should be, 54 Senate Democrats issued a letter to BP asking for an initial $20 billion.

Obama, who on Monday made his fourth trip to the Gulf since the start of the crisis, is set to deliver an address on the spill Tuesday evening. According to Burton, Obama has personally decided to give the remarks from the Oval Office. It will mark the first Oval Office address of Obama's presidency.
