Obama Pledges To Quickly Tap New Supreme Court Justice
President Barack Obama said Friday that he will fill retiring Associate Justice John Paul Stevens’ seat on the Supreme Court before the Court begins their next term.
“I will move quickly to name a nominee,” Obama said in a statement from the White House Rose Garden. “I view the process of selecting a Supreme Court nominee as among my most serious responsibilities as president.”
Obama gave no hints as to whom he may choose, but noted that he will select a nominee with “an independent mind, a record of excellence and integrity.” He added that his eventual choice will recognize that “in a democracy, powerful interests must not be able to drown out the voices of ordinary citizens.”
Stevens, who will turn 90 this month, announced his retirement Friday morning. This is the second Supreme Court vacancy facing the administration since Obama assumed office.
