Iowa Democrat Accuses Republicans Of Flip-Flopping On Insurance Mandate

Iowa State Senator Jack Hatch (D) accused his state's former governors Terry Branstad and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R) of changing positions on an individual mandate for health insurance included in the recently signed health care reform legislation.
"Our politicians have to be honest about where they were in the past and not be swayed by political convenience," said Hatch during a phone conference with reporters.
Branstad, who served as governor from 1983-1999, is currently running for an additional term. Romney is widely considered a possible Republican candidate for the 2012 presidential election.
According to Democratic National Committee press secretary Hari Sevugan, both Romney and Branstad supported individual mandates while in office.
"When people were more sober mined and less swayed by the political ends, both [Republicans] thought a mandate ... would drive down costs," said Sevugan. "Now is as good as time as any to clarify their positions."
