Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad W. Allen was confident in the future of the Coast Guard, despite personnel cuts suggested under President Barack Obama’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2011.
“As Commandant, I supported this budget, as it has provided me the flexibility and the Coast Guard the flexibility to continue our re-capitalization needs,” said Allen during remarks before a National Press Club Luncheon.
The proposed budget will cut the Coast Guard by 773 individuals. The overall budget for 2011 will likely be $10.08 billion, an increase from the $9.7 billion allocated for 2010.
According to Allen, the Coast Guard is in a constant struggle to keep the program up to speed with modernization. The new budget accommodates this need by providing to supply new ships and upkeep older vessels.
“So what is the state of the Coast Guard? In two words: ready and resilient,” said Allen.
