Clinton Condemns WikiLeaks' Release Of Confidential Documents

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Monday strongly condemned the ongoing release of classified State Department cables orchestrated by the whistleblower site WikiLeaks.

“It puts peoples’ lives in danger, threatens our national security and undermines our efforts to work with other countries to solve shared problems,” Clinton told reporters.

While declining to comment on the material within the leaked cables, Clinton stressed that the American government “deeply regrets” the publication and that the content of the documents, which often times address world leaders in frank terms, do not reflect the United States’ official foreign policy.

“Our policy is a matter of public record as reflected in our statements and our actions around the world,” Clinton said.

The release of the State Department cables follows WikiLeak’s release of classified documents on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

Clinton is scheduled to travel to Central Asia this week, which will place her amid world leaders described in the documents.
