In Light Of Shootings, Marine Corps Marathon Will Be Under Heightened Security
In light of three shootings at military establishments over the past two weeks, the Sunday’s Marine Corp Marathon will be held under a “heightened sense of security,” according to Defense Department spokesperson Col. David Lapan.
The Pentagon Force Protection Agency will be out in larger numbers to monitor the pre-marathon activities in the complex’s north parking lot. 30,000 runners are expected to attend.
Two bullets were found embedded in the third and fourth floor windows of the Pentagon last Tuesday. Earlier in the week, the National Marine Museum on the Quantico military base in Triangle, Virginia was fired upon five times by an unknown gunman. This week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced that a Marine Corps recruiting station was fired upon as well.
Investigators have determined that the Pentagon and Marine Corps Museum were shot at with the same weapon.
All three of the shooting incidents took place either late at night or in the pre-dawn hours and no injuries have been reported. There are currently no suspects.
According to Lapan, the uptick in security for Sunday’s Marathon is only related to concerns surrounding the shots, and not Wednesday’s reports of a foiled plot to bomb Arlington, Virginia Metro stations.
