Two Bullets Hit The Pentagon
Two bullets were found embedded in windows on the third and fourth floors of the Pentagon Tuesday following reports of 5-7 gunshots around 4:55 am.
Pentagon Force Protection Agency Director Steven Calvery told reporters Tuesday that the shooting is currently viewed as a random event, but that an investigation with the Joint Terrorism Task Force as well as state and local police officials is underway. The FBI is also providing assistance.
Calvery noted that additional bullet fragments may be found.
Tuesday’s shooting follows an occurrence over the weekend at a Marine Corps Museum in Virginia, wherein an unknown gunman shot at several windows. Calvery could not say if the incidents were related and said that there were no known threats on the complex or its personnel.
There are currently no suspects. Calvery could not state what model firearm the bullets were fired from, but said they were likely from a rifle. Surveillance footage is currently being examined.
The embedded bullets were discovered on the south side of the building in a section that is currently under renovation and unoccupied. There were no injuries.
The gunshots, which were reported by Pentagon police officers, prompted a brief lockdown of the complex and the shutdown of a segment of the nearby highway while investigators performed a security sweep.
This is the first shooting incident at the Pentagon since gunman John Bedell opened fire at the Pentagon’s metro station in early March. Bedell injured two officers and was shot by the police shortly after.
