Labor Secretary Anticipates Employment Gains In Auto-Industry

Data released Tuesday showing significant sales gains across the auto-industry signals good news for autoworkers, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis told reporters Wednesday.
“Overall, we are going to see some growth,” Solis said during a morning teleconference.
Solis attributed the predicted improvement to actions spurred by the Obama administration, including the Recovery Act and Cash for Clunkers program.
“Cash-for-clunkers really helped to stimulate the automobile industry,” Solis explained, and cited the reopening of an automotive plant in Delaware as a sign of the program’s impact.
“They hope to bring back about 2,000 more employees,” Solis added.
Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), who joined Solis, credited the bailout of the automotive industry as another contributing factor.
“Helping with general motors and the auto-industry was the most significant investment in manufacturing in our country in the last thirty years,” said Ryan. “Our community is going to benefit from it.”
The Labor Secretary also announced the allocation of an additional $100 million in Recovery Act funds for green-jobs training.
