Notes From Today's White House Gaggle
Notes from the Gaggle with Robert Gibbs
July 28th, 2009
Health Care:
The White House has not yet seen legislative language. The President believes that people need alternatives, choice and competition. The President is talking to individual senators. The legislation is being discussed between Democrats and Republicans on the Committees. The two parties are discussing establishing different options for uninsured Americans. The President is concerned about addressing insurance for those with pre-existing medical conditions, and a cap on out of pocket expenses.
Thursday's “Beer Meeting” Between President Obama, Professor Gates and Sgt. Crowley at 6 pm:
It will be less of a formal meeting. It is an opportunity to step back a bit, Gibbs said. The three will probably sit on the picnic table behind the Oval Office. There will probably be a photo opportunity. Sgt. Crowley, who will bring his family, likes Blue Moon beer. The President sees this meeting as a chance to dialogue. The President "wants to take the temperature down a bit," Gibbs stated.
Israel and Palestine:
Secretary Gates and General Jim Jones are on the way to the region. Senator Mitchell is already in the region.
The feedback so far is positive. There is a concentrated diplomatic effort and peace negotiations will take time.
Sotomayor:
It is a question for the Committee. This is the first time some members of the Committee are voting against someone. Some members have voted on eight or nine nominees. The President nominated someone with genuine depth, Gibbs said. Sotomayor has more judicial experience as anyone in the last 100 years. The President wants Justice Sotomayor to be at the court before October to be able to take part in selecting cases.
Health Care "Tele-Town Hall:"
The President will be taking his case to the American people. There will be about one hundred thousand people
on the AARP costs. Reforms are necessary for making health care more accessible and affordable.
COPS program money:
Based on need relating to crime statistics
