World Autism Day garners support from Yoko Ono
Representatives promoting World Autism Day sounded a global alert drawing a huge crowd at United Nations Headquarters today. Yoko Ono, a spokesperson for the cause, said the disorder affects 67 million. Early diagnosis and intervention were cited as key steps to mitigate autism. Over 100 events took place today in 35 countries including Japan, Mexico and Nigeria.
At the unveiling, Yoko Ono presented her new mural created for the day. The mural stands 7 feet tall and is comprised of 67 acrylic puzzle pieces. Each piece will be autographed and auctioned off at www.charitybuzz.com. Bob and Suzanne Wright, who run Autism Speaks, a non-profit charity created to promote knowledge on the issue, were also at the event to fundraise and establish new partnerships. They hope to put an end to the complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's inability to communicate and develop social relationships. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls.
