Ban Ki-moon discusses timely visit to regions in "crisis"

The UN Secretary-General (SG) met with reporters this morning to give a wrap up in his visit to Addis, Delhi,  Pakistan, and Gaza.  At the World Economic Forum in Davos, he met with officials in Spain at a high level meeting on global food insecurity.

"I call on the international community for a sharp increase in agricultural assistance to the most vulnerable nations. It is a time to get back to basics. No human rights are more essential than the right to eat.  At Davos, we reminded wealthy nations of their pledges to the UN millennium development goals. Now more than ever it is time to deliver. The United States, China and India all must show the way. We must all find a way to adapt."

The SG has been pushing to involve world leaders in pursuit of climate initiatives. He would like to see 2009 as a year of climate change stressing new approaches to climate and energy programs. The SG was also questioned on Khadafi's role as the elected African Union leader.  In Addis Ababa at the African Union Summit, the SG spoke with his officials to address the appropriate way to look ahead at many growing crises throughout the continent, including financial aid.

He was questioned on the Israeli elections--and responded that he hoped whomever is in power--a peace process will move ahead. "About the investigation into the shelling of UN schools, I urged officials to investigate this matter thoroughly. I have also consistently demanded the Israeli government to open all border crossings.  On the same account, weapons and ammunition should not be allowed into Gaza. I do not have any doubt that both sides will fully cooperate on the conduct of the inquiry commission." Prime Minister Olmert has promised the SG personally to look into the issue immediately.

On Myanmar, the SG looks forward to building dialogue and hoped the government and opposition will resume substantive dialogue. On Zimbabwe the SG said he welcomed unity government, he still believes it is not a perfect unity. He underscored that power-sharing agreements must be shared." The UN is working closely with members in South Africa to devise a better strategy to deal with the food crisis and urgent humanitarian assistance needed.

"I am also gravely concerned by the plight of tens of thousands of people in Sri Lanka." The SG contacted the president to stress that all action must be consistent with the presence of humanitarian law in order to protect civilians.

On his meeting  with President Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan he stated: "The country requires good governance. We need a stronger approach toward Afghanistan." He added that regional cooperation is essential. He also emphasized the importance of good relations in India. The SG also set up a commission to investigate the assassination of former prime minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in December 2007." In his meetings to discuss peace between nuclear powerful Pakistan and India, the SG said that after the Mumbai terrorist attacks, the relationship between these countries was intense. The SG has urged leaders to resolve the crisis through bi-lateral dialogue.

"I was reasonably relieved and grateful to both leaders of these countries who committed to fully cooperate. From my part, I have urged Pakistani leaders to fully cooperate. "

The SG also met with Iraqi officials.  He congratulated leaders for the successful elections.

"I am gravely concerned by the plight of tens of thousands of people in Sri Lanka." The SG contacted the president to stress that all action must be consistent with the presence of humanitarian law in order to protect civilians.
