White House Gaggle
By Lovisa Frost
The President's Schedule
President Bush had his normal intelligence briefings. At 10am, he will receive a briefing by the co-chairs of the President's Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors. At 3.45 pm, the President participates in a photo opportunity with 2007 Boys and Girls Nation Delegates.
White House Press Secretary Tony Snow briefs the press at 12.30 pm today.
Executive Privilege
Snow was asked about the basis for executive privilege in terms of the Republican National Committee, and he clarified that this was about White House emails that have been on the RNC servers. Snow also said that, "the privilege only extends to conversations with those who work within the White House and their confidential conversations with the President." When asked about the previously lost emails and if they now have been recovered, Snow said that they are still trying to work through it, as it is a very complicated process.
House Judiciary regarding Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten
Questioned about the White House response to the House Judiciary Committee's vote on the resolution being drafted citing Miers and Bolton as being in contempt of Congress,
Snow said that it is still up to the House, and it is not likely to come to a vote until next week. "It appears as what we have here, is an attempt to create a political confrontation that is completely unnecessary." The Administration has made available to the Congress thousands and thousands of pages of documents. "It is very little reason to believe that a court is going to honor a criminal contempt citation on the basis of an executive privilege claim."
Fort Lewis funerals
When questioned about Fort Lewis's decision to limit the number of funerals of fallen soldiers in Iraq to only once a month, stirring up emotions among families, Snow said he doesn't think there is a White House view on this right now. This was the first he has heard of this story.
Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Soldiers
This morning the President is meeting with former Secretary Shalala and former Senator Dole, and was asked why they are meeting with the President before it votes on its final recommendations, Snow said that they wanted to do it this way. "It is a courtesy visit, an opportunity to share some of their views." He also said that there will be an official body of text at 1.30 pm today, and the White House looks forward to see what they have found.
Gordon Brown
When asked what the President and British Prime Minister are going to talk about on Sunday and Monday, Snow said they do not have any visit confirmed at this point.
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
Snow was asked about the accusations facing the Attorney General from yesterday's Judiciary Committee hearing. Snow said that the White House is confident that the Attorney General's testimony is truthful. In terms of anything else, he directed it back to the Department of Justice.
