White House Gaggle
By Lovisa Frost
President's Schedule
At 8 am President Bush had his normal briefings. At 9 am, he participated in a briefing on comprehensive immigration reform. At 10.35am, the President has an interview with the Washington Examiner in the Oval Office.
White House Press Secretary Tony Snow will brief the press at 12.30 pm today.
Immigration
When asked if there are any meetings scheduled with lawmakers today, or any calls made in regard to the immigration bill, Snow replied that there are none that he is aware of.
The White House is confident that, "when it is all said and done, we will have a comprehensive immigration reform out of the Senate, and the move to the House".
Senator Lugar
When asked about Senator Richard Lugar's comments yesterday about the Iraq war, Snow answered that this is not new.
However, both the Senator and the White House agree that they do not want to have an indefinite troop surge. When asked if the Administration is worried that more GOP Senators will go in the same direction as Sen. Lugar, Snow said that he would like for them to hear from General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker before making such decisions.
Iraq
It is likely to a very difficult summer and terrorists are doing their very best to try to create acts of terror, and they have succeeded in a few instances, but have others been intercepted.
When asked if there is any planning at the Pentagon of pulling out, Snow said that it is awfully premature to talk about such things when they have just gotten people on the ground trying to implement the Baghdad security plan.
And when asked if there are any blueprints for the future, Snow stated that he does not know. He continued to say that "the Pentagon is a place where they have a lot of blue prints and for very good reasons they do not share them."
Guantanamo
Snow was asked if there have been any studies about what would happen if Guantanamo
closed and the prisoners were to become part of the American judicial prison system.
Snow said that the issue has been discussed from the podium previously. It is a problematic issue, and it is their hope to take care of it as rapidly as possible; as well as having them repatriated to their home countries.
Talk Radio Influence
When asked about the influence of talk radio in the debate on immigration reform, and how the Administration feels about the role it plays, especially in regard to Senator Lott's recent comments, Snow said that talk radio is obviously a great place where democracy is practiced out in the open. Snow said that he has done a dozen interviews on talk radio and will do more this week. Snow says he will not argue with Senator Lott.
