White House Press Secretary Dana Perino will brief the press at noon today.
British Troop Withdrawal
Dana Perino was asked if the Iraqi security forces are capable of handling the security situation in Basra, if the British are pulling out 1,000 troops as set by the end of the year. She said that the Iraqis have been working with the British to reach this point, where they are able to take over the security- and it seems like they are right on schedule. The President was aware of the planned schedule. When leaving Washington in September, General Petreus also stopped over in London on his way to Iraq, and met with British officials. Presidential Advice
When asked if the President is giving advice to Hillary Clinton, Perino said no. Perino also said that the comments were taken out of context. She talked about remarks made by the President in an interview where he said that is different being the president and being a candidate, in regards to the global war on terror and other issues. Perino said it was a general comment and not directed to any one candidate in particular.
North and South Korea Talks
Perino was asked about the expected outcome of the talks between the two nations, and she said that we will have to wait and see what comes out of it. However, she said that, "We have always been supportive for an inter-Korean dialogue between the countries. "
President Putin
When asked if the White House has a comment about the Russian President Putin aspiring to be the next Prime Minister of Russia, Perino said that she hopes that there are free and fair elections and that the people of Russia will be able to express themselves in a democracy.
Myanmar
When asked how reliable the death toll is from the recent acts of violence in Myanmar, and if it could be higher, Perino said that we are dealing with a closed society and it is hard to tell. It is possible that the numbers are higher and they have a lot of concern about that.
