White House Gaggle
By Ellen Ratner
July 5, 2006
President's Schedule:
The White House added an immigration event to the President's schedule today. He is having lunch with the Vice President and will be having an Oval Office meeting with the President of Georgia.
North Korea:
There is sharing information. Tony Snow said that you have to be nuanced about it. He said that he was not going to share the proposal that is being talked about but there was going to be something coming from our allies: (China, South Korea, Japan, Russia—all who are parties in the six-party talks). The President has been briefed by the National Security Advisor and talked to the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State. NORCOM said that the long range missile was a launch failure and not an abort. They are saying this with a high degree of confidence, but military experts are taking a closer look. The North Koreans have been contacted by the other parties in the six-party talks and they have made their displeasure known. The object, Snow said, is to get North Korea to step back and reenter the six-party talks. Today's missile was a Nodong and made a splash in the Sea of Japan about 4:22 am Eastern. Steve Hadley thinks that there may be a couple or a few short and medium range missiles that are launchable. Asked about the timing, Tony said that it occurred about the same time as the shuttle launch.
Immigration:
Asked about the New York Times article as to a change of position on immigration, Tony said that the President still believes in comprehensive reform and that has not changed. Tony said that the press should read the exact quotes in the Times and that the administration is not just doing border security.
NSA
The NSA has met about the future of Cuba and to discuss Cuba in a post-Castro world. When asked by Helen Thomas, Tony answered, "Ask God". He said they were not trying to depose Castro, just trying to provide democracy in a post-Castro world.
President of Georgia:
The two leaders will be discussing the progress of Democracy.
EU Meeting with Iran:
The Iranians have postponed the meeting by one day. They expect an answer to the proposal by July 12th in advance of the G-8 meeting.
