White House Gaggle

By Gregory Gorman
July 26, 2006

President's Schedule

The president will have policy time this morning and a photo opportunity later today with the 2005 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers at the White House. He will then depart Washington for Fort Belvoir, Virginia for a lunch with the Prime Minister of Iraq and approximately 200 military personnel and their families. In attendance will also be the Commander of Fort Belvoir and his wife, Ambassador Khalilzad, Virginia Senators Allen and Warner and Representative Davis (VA-11th) who represents the Fort Belvoir district. Following lunch, the president will attend a campaign reception for Representative Shelley Moore Capito in West Virginia. White House Press Secretary Tony Snow announced that President Bush will travel to Florida on Sunday night and make remarks on the economy in Miami on Monday. This will be the second of the president's "drill down" trips, the first being his recent trip to Chicago. Other topics for discussion during the president's tr

ip will be hurricane preparedness and trade. While in Florida, the president will also tour the Port of Miami and attend a Republican National Committee reception.

Diplomatic Talks in Rome

When asked to discuss the breakdown of the diplomatic talks in Rome calling for a ceasefire in the recent crisis in Lebanon, Snow said, " . . . I think it is important to recognize that if you don't have a specified . . . date for a ceasefire, that is not a failure, that is a reality".

Prime Minister Maliki Speech to Congress

In addressing some Democrats' desire to boycott Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki's speech before the joint session of Congress, Snow desired to explain democracy to "people on Capitol Hill". He said Prime Minister Maliki is free to say anything he wants as the duly elected official for Iraq. He went on to say that the White House has seen early versions of the speech and that if Democrats want to boycott the speech, "it will be their loss".

United Nations Workers' Deaths

Snow characterized the deaths of four UN workers in Southern Lebanon as "a horrible thing" but that there is no reason to suggest that the workers were targeted by Israel. He also reminded the press that Israel has said that the workers were not deliberately targeted and the government of Israel has promised to share investigation information with the world.
