President's Schedule

This morning President Bush called President Mubarak of Egypt to extend his condolences for the lives lost following the bombings that took place yesterday. President Bush reiterated that the United States stands with Egypt in the fight against terrorism. White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said that President Mubarak indicated that Egypt would pursue the ones responsible and bring them to justice. President Bush also had his usual intelligence briefings this morning. At 10.05 am, the President will make remarks on energy at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. Later this morning at 11.30 am, President Bush participates in a meeting in the Roosevelt Room of the White House with a bi-partisan group of the Senate, including the Senate leadership, members of the Armed Services Committee, as well as General Casey and the Deputy Chief of Mission in Iraq via videoconference. This is an opportunity to get updates on Iraq and the announcement from the government about the seven leader leaders selected last week. At 2.05 pm, the President will participate in the presentation of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy to the United States Naval Academy football team. Later this afternoon, at 3.25 pm, President Bush is scheduled to meet with bi-partisan members of the Senate to talk about immigration reform. Scott McClellan briefs the press at 1 pm today.

Energy and Price Gouging

McClellan said that it is not just now that we are seeing rising gas prices, but instead this has been a recurring problem because we are dependant on foreign sources of energy. "Our addiction to oil is a serious concern," McClellan said. The long-term solution needs to be addressed and that means to eliminate the cause of high gas prices, which the President has outlined in the Advance Energy Initiative. As part of the short-term solution, McClellan said that among other things, the President will focus, "on making sure that consumers and tax payers are being treated fairly." It is in this context that the President also has directed the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether the prices of gasoline have been unfairly manipulated in any way since the hurricanes last year. McClellan was asked why the Republican leaders felt the need to send him a letter if the President has been in close contact with Congress. He answered, "We are all on the same page when it comes to making sure there is no price gouging. These are issues that we have been in discussions with them about. I think they wanted to send the letter to spell out what they have been talking about as well." When asked if it is safe to say that ANWR is dead, in terms of the next Congress, McClellan replied that the President will talk about the importance of boosting production here at home. Furthermore, the President will discuss passing the ANWR provision. McClellan also reminded the press that the provision was passed several years ago, however, it was vetoed by President Bush's predecessor.

Canadian Prime Minister Harper

When asked if the President had a conversation with Prime Minister Harper of Canada, McClellan replied that they had a good conversation and talked about a few issues. One of the reasons President Bush called him was to express condolences for the loss of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.
