Announcement on Iraq by White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan
"As we approach the three year anniversary of the start of the Operation Iraqi Freedom and the liberation of Iraq from Saddam Hussein's brutality
and oppression, the President will be giving a series of speeches to update the American people on our strategy for victory in Iraq. This is an
opportunity for the President to continue to discuss the progress that is being made on the ground."
On Monday, the President will be giving the first of three speeches focused on the security strategy and efforts to defeat the terrorists as well as
training of Iraqi security forces so that they can continue to take the lead in that fight. In tomorrow's weekly radio address, the President will
preview a bit more of the upcoming speeches. Furthermore, the Vice-President, Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense are all expected to make remarks to update the American people on the
war in Iraq.
On the same topic, McClellan also stated, "We have an important milestone coming up . . . and we are a nation at war and it is important for the Commander-in-Chief to keep the American people updated on the strategy we have in place for winning in Iraq."
Ukraine
When asked about the agenda for the meeting of the Foreign Minister of the Ukraine, McClellan replied that they have upcoming elections and it is an
opportunity for the President to show his continued support for the people of the Ukraine. McClellan said that the United States will continue to speak out for free and fair elections and stated, "The President believes very strongly that everyone has the universal right to live freely and that is one of the fundamental values of this country." McClellan continued to say, "Countries will move forward at different progress and this is a long-term commitment, but we are going to do what we can to speak out in support of the advance of democracy."
Ports Deal
The decision by the United Arab Emirates is a way to move forward and it does resolve this matter, McClellan stated. The White House still supports
the reform of the CFIUS process and will continue to work with Congress to make sure that everybody has a greater understanding of how these
transactions work. "I think the UAE's decision reflects their understanding of the importance of our broader relationship," McClellan said.
Trent Duffy
McClellan announced that "it is sad to see [Deputy Press Secretary] Trent Duffy move on to bigger and better things, but Trent has done an outstanding
job and we wish him all the best. It is going to be hard to replace him, it was easy replacing the last guy, but it will be hard to replace Trent."
