Alito Filibuster Threat
In response to a question about the proposed threat of a filibuster by Senator John Kerry, White House Press Secretary said, "It was a historic day yesterday. It was the first ever call for a filibuster from the slopes of Davos, Switzerland". McClellan went on to say that the White House is not specifically dismissing the filibuster but that "maybe Senator Kerry needs to spend more time in the United States Senate so he can refresh him memory on the rules of the Senate. Senate rules say you have to have the votes to filibuster".
Hamas Victory in Palestinian Elections
With regard to the victory of Hamas in this week's Palestinian elections, McClellan said, "The Palestinian people want peace. The aspirations of the Palestinian people can only come from a two-state solution. We think it is the best way to proceed with peace". McClellan then reiterated the president's statement that the best thing about democracy is that it holds leaders accountable and that the Palestinian people voted for a change in the status quo. He said, "We saw the power of democracy taking place". When asked if the White House was surprised by the Hamas' victory in the elections, McClellan said that he would not describe it that way.
Iranian Nuclear Program
McClellan commented that the administration remains in discussion with its partners in how to best send a clear message that it is unacceptable for the current Iranian regime to possess nuclear weapons. However, he said the president continues to believe that nuclear energy is a viable and clean source of energy and that the United States has had talks with a number of countries on how to address nuclear energy needs. When asked, McClellan said that the president will address energy needs as a high priority in the State of the Union address on Tuesday.
