President's Schedule
The President had breakfast with several Republican Congressional Leaders:
Senator Bill Frist, Senator Mitch McConnell, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, Congressman Roy Blunt. They discussed congressional priorities, such as moving forward on the budget reconciliation package, spending bills, avian flu, Judge Alito, and the Patriot Act. On the Patriot Act, they wanted to make sure that law enforcement have the tools they need to combat terrorism in the United States. White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said, "The President is committed to moving forward on our priorities and exercising spending restrain as we do so." Following the breakfast, the President had his usual briefings, as well as a meeting with Secretary of Defense. The President will also be taping his Saturday Radio Address today as he will be traveling on Friday. At noon, President and Mrs. Bush look forward to hosting their Royal Highnesses, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Judge Alito
Judge Samuel Alito is meeting with seven Senators today bringing the total number of courtesy visits to members of the Senate to 16.
Senate Closed Session
When asked what the White House makes of what happened in the Senate yesterday? McClellan countered that "You have heard Democratic leaders say that they want to look at how intelligence was used. It's all part of the public record. It goes back to the previous administrations. It goes back to previous democratic leaders. Senator Reid may want to look at previous democratic leaders, such as himself, and how they used the intelligence to come to the same conclusion that Saddam Hussein and his regime were a threat. If they want to raise that issue they need to start by looking at their own comments, their own conclusion, their own notes."
Scooter Libby Investigation
McClellan was asked who at the White House will monitor the Libby court proceedings. He answered that the Counsel's office is the lead in terms of making sure that the White House is doing their part to cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
Al-Qaeda Captives in Secret Base
When asked if the Unites States is holding Al Queda captives at a secret base in Eastern Europe or elsewhere, McClellan answered that, "I am not going to get into discussion on specific intelligence issues. The President's most important responsibility is to protect the American people. It is a responsibility he takes very seriously. We are engaged in a global war on terrorism, a global war against Islamic militants who are determent to attack America and kill innocent men, women and children."
