January 3, 2005
President's Schedule:
The President had his usual round of briefings. This morning he will meet in the Roosevelt Room with former Presidents Bush and Clinton. They will be leading the efforts to encourage Americans to give to non-governmental organizations for tsunami relief efforts. The President will then depart the White House to visit the embassies of India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. He will meet with ambassadors and sign the condolence book. When he returns he will meet with Cabinet Secretaries Ridge and Veneman to thank them for their service and to get updates. He will also meet with the Secretary of Defense. Later in the afternoon he will address new members of Congress. He will make remarks and then have a reception in the State Dining room for them. There will be a State Department briefing at 12:30 pm.
Tsunami:
Most of the briefing focused on the tsunami relief. President Bush "41" and President Clinton will be doing media interviews in connection with the relief efforts. Scott McClellan said that, "The President commends the American people for their outpouring of support". He said that it was important to make sure that we are doing everything we can and the President is pleased that these leaders are spearheading these efforts. Asked if the President has donated, Scott said that the President intends to make a personal donation but he does not know if he has yet. The White House also intends to work with Congress. The White House is directing people to the USA Freedom Corps website for lists of
organizations in the area. There are currently thirty seven million dollars available to people on the ground. Scott said that the United States is playing a leading role in relief efforts.
Asked if the President has thought of canceling the inauguration or
reducing the festivities, Scott McClellan referred the question to the
Inaugural Committee. In terms of the situation, the President is receiving daily updates from Secretary Powell. Scott reiterated that through United States action, the US is playing a leading role in the humanitarian relief effort. Scott said that the United States worked to establish the core group of countries: Japan, India, Australia and the United States.
Tax Reform Panel:
The White House expects to be announcing it soon. There is a change in
terms of timing. They are close to finishing who will be on the advisory panel.
Lifetime Detention:
Scott deflected the question saying, "check with the Department of
Defense" for things they might be looking at or suggesting.
