White House Gaggle

In lieu of a morning Gaggle, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice briefed the press on the President's 5-point plan for a sovereign Iraq as well as on his schedule for D-Day commemorations in Europe and the upcoming G8 summit in Sea Island, Georgia.
The President's 5-Point Plan:
Dr. Rice reiterated President Bush's vision for a democratic, secure and prosperous Iraq through his 5-point plan for the transfer of sovereignty to Iraqis. The President's plan includes: the handover of power to a sovereign government, the establishment of stability and security, the continued building of infrastructure, the encouragement of more international support and the occasion of free elections to bring forth Iraq's first democratically elected government.
As part of the President's 5-point plan, UN Special Advisor Brahimi today has announced the formation and composition of the Iraqi interim government. The government will include 6 women, 5 regional officials and 4 members of the former governing council. Dr. Rice thanked Mr. Brahimi on behalf of the President, "for his tireless efforts under what were very demanding circumstances".
The Week Ahead:
The President will leave Thursday for a trip to Italy and France. On Friday June 4th, the President will meet with Italian President Ciampi as well as with His Holiness Pope John Paul II followed by dinner with Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi.
On Saturday June 5th, the President will meet with Prime Minister Berlusconi and will then depart for Paris where he will meet with French President Chirac.
On Sunday, June 6th, the President will travel to Normandy, France for the 60th Anniversary of D- Day. He will pay his respects and make remarks at the American Cemetery followed by a multi-national lunch and ceremony marking the D-Day anniversary. Following the remembrance, the President will depart France for Sea Island, Georgia where he will host the 2004 G8 summit.
2004 G8 Summit:
This year's summit will focus on advancing freedom by strengthening international cooperation in order to make the world safer and better. Key discussions will take place on the President's broader Middle East initiative, action against WMD proliferation, peacekeeping issues, a secure international travel initiative, Africa and on private sector-led growth and development.
On Tuesday, June 8th, the President will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi followed by a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Martin. The President will also have meetings with German Chancellor Schroeder and Russian President Putin. The evening will close with a social dinner for the G8 leaders.
On Wednesday, June 9th, the President will have a working breakfast with British Prime Minister Blair and will officially open the G8 Summit. The G8 leaders will lunch with leaders from Afghanistan, Turkey, Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan and Yemen to show support for freedom in the Middle East.
On Thursday, June 10th, the President will meet with Prime Minister Berlusconi and President Chirac. The G8 leaders will lunch with African leaders from Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, Algeria, Nigeria and Senegal to discuss cooperation and development in Africa. The G8 summit will wrap-up on Thursday and the President will depart Sea Island for Savannah where he will meet with the press.
