Sanctions In Iran Will Work, Says GOP Rep.

Congressman Dan Burton (R-Ind.) challenged witnesses at a hearing for the House Committee on Foreign Affairs who oppose hasty sanctions. He said that the longer the U.S. waits to make a move, it is likely that more violence on the streets in Tehran will erupt, adding that the government of Iran will allow it to happen. Burton reminded the Committee that the people of Iran are bound to the U.S. in terms of their economy, thus sanctions would be useful. (1:10).

At an American Enterprise Institute discussion on “The Ahmadinejad Presidency and its Impact on Iranian Civil and Political Society,” Iran Nameh editor Hormoz Hekmat says that “everyone knows there are no political parties in Iran” and refers to the Iranian elections as “non-elections” in which the elected parties have “nothing to do” with the people’s designs for their government.
