Former Colombian President criticizes U.S. drug policy

Bernath: "Basically we lie to children about the dangers of marijuana."

Dan Bernath, the Director of Communications at the Marijuana Policy Project, in Washington, D.C., said that the U.S. needs proven effects based education programs regarding marijuana and other drugs, especially for our kids. Bernath said “Basically we lie to children about the dangers of marijuana. Kids aren’t stupid, you know, and when they encounter these drugs for the first time, marijuana, and they discover that the world doesn’t come crashing around them like they’ve been told it would in their D.A.R.E. programs, they become skeptical and they start to wonder what else they’ve been lied to about.” (00:41)

Credit card debt is like drug addiction?

At a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on “Consumer Debt: Are Credit Cards Bankrupting Americans?” Adam Levitin from Georgetown University Law Center said, “It is like drug use in this sense. There is definitely an addictive quality to credit...there is definitely are parallels between the way consumers use credit and what we see with addictive products.”

Drug price disparities between the U.S. and Canada

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) says that after Ovation Pharmaceuticals acquired the rights to the drug Indocin from Merck, they quickly increased the price by more than 18 times. Klobuchar points out that eventhough it is an American company, the price they charge is 44 times higher than what they sell it for in Canada. Klobuchar says there is no real justification for the huge price disparity. (1:04)
