Oil Spill Assistance Will Be Easier To Receive Than Unemployment Insurance, Says White House Official
Melody Barnes, the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, said during a conference call with reporters Wednesday that assistance the White House is trying to extend to those who've lost their job due to the massive oil spill off the Gulf Coast will require recipients to meet a looser criteria than traditional unemployment insurance.
“Those who can’t qualify for regular unemployment insurance will be eligible,” Barnes said. “For example, those who are self-employed, as many fisherman are, or those who may not have worked the requisite number of hours.” (0:20)
