President Sarkozy Of France Says Europe And America Must Come Up With New Answers
President Nicolas Sarkozy of France is in the United States this week to meet with President Obama to discuss Afghanistan and pressing global financial issues. His first stop this morning was at Columbia University's World Leaders Forum. Participants in the Forum meet with academia and students to spark international debate on the world's most sensitive concerns. The Forum also boasts free expression and an end to censorship.
President Sarkozy previously served as the Minister of Interior and Finance for the government of France.
"In following him, one has the sense that he is more inclined than most to express his views. President Sarkozy is sure to be praised for his determined leadership," said the head of the Forum in the opening address.
President Sarkozy highlighted the warm relations between France and the United States. "Through you I am addressing the great people of the United States so that you should understand that Europe and the United States of America must work together. We are your European friends. We in Europe admire you, you need not worry about that," he added.
Sarkozy emphasized that if Europe and America do not redesign the global financial architecture, then no other alliance will succeed. He highlighted the urgent need for an open discussion on the economic crisis and world economic regulation.
"We can no longer expect a capitalist system where there are no rules, no regulation, no protectionism."
Sarkozy will meet with President Obama tomorrow to discuss the global economic collapse and to propose a "reinvention" of the new world economy. He will also congratulate Obama on his reform of the health care system.
Additionally, Mr. Sarkozy cited the escalation and crash of oil prices and fossil fuels and the need for countries producing these resources to regulate prices.
He also called for a full reform of the United Nations Security Council where not a single African country (1 billion people) is represented.
"Nor is there a single Arab country represented or India, where there are over 1 billion people and it is the second most powerful economy and does not have a seat--why is that the case? How do you expect to regulate without these countries? Is that responsible? Does that make any sense to you?" he added.
Sarkozy and Prime Minister Gordon Brown of the United Kingdom recently initiated a greater push for full reform of the Security Council.
He added that Iran must not be allowed to "get its hands on nuclear weapons" and that the alliance between Europe and the United States is particularly essential in this regard. He also gave praise to Obama in working to fight terrorism and said the Moscow train bombings this morning demonstrate the urgency for the world community to work together to put an end to global terrorism.

America rejected the European form of governance over 200 years ago. With very good reason. Unfortunately our current politicians seem to think that that was a mistake and are working tirelessly to join the world in reinstituting the failed European mode. About the only thing I can agree with regarding Sarkozy's speech is his comment regarding protectionism. By all means; let America return to its unique place in the world. Stop worrying about what the world thinks. Stop sending our money, jobs, and freedoms everywhere else. While France did assist a bit in our revolution it was for their own self-serving purposes (they hated Britain too). Thank you but that assistance was well paid back in WW II. WORLD government and regulation? No thanks. America can do quite well without it AND defend itself quite adequately from those who would prefer a world without TRUE liberty and freedom.
Dear AEstates59,
Have you ever seen the remarkable film "SICKO" by Michael Moore? No?
Well when you do you will realize that the "AMERICAN DREAM" is just that,.. a pipeline dream, an illusion. There is no level playing field in the US. The rich and powerful remain rich and powerful to the detriment of the shrinking middle class and an ever growing amount of poverty stricken people everywhere in the country. Your politicians and your judiciary system is totally corrupt as are your military and intelligence services who are hell bent on world domination. It was the CIA who introduced "CRACK" into your country and it is the CIA who runs the global drug trade in close colaboration with the Columbian drug cartels. Your leaders lie continuously to your people who have no idea that the US shadow government actually has plans to reduce world population by the introduction of various pathogens and viruses. AIDS was created by the genetic insertion of the human HTLV-1 Leukemia genome into the VISNA sheep virus to create HIV which was then deceitfully administered as a smallpox vaccine in Africa, India, Nepal, Pakistan by personnel from the Center for Disease Control.
Europe has a moral conscience, your country's leaders doe not and make no mistake, the word is out about them now. The US is no longer the ally the world once had....you are the enemy that will be eliminated from without and from within by forces far beyond your comprehension. People like you are dangerous and you will reap what you sow...sooner or later...that is a promise.
the problem is that to redesign a new architecture you need a new logic to achieve your aims therefore the words are pretty but inapplicable unrealistic and will never succeed. reason dictates. and logic follows what that reason incites. to look at the world on a new way you must perceive differently and this is not the case good intentions but unrealistic because of the current reasoning process. just political blah blah. however to revamp the old you need a new way of reasoning a new logic.. once that found and accepted we shall evolve until them is just the same old song with anew arrangement
