Mandatory Minimum Sentences Are Un-American, Says FAMM President
Julie Stewart, President and Founder of Families Against Mandatory Minimums Foundation (FAMM), spoke out against mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenders during a hearing with the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security Tuesday. "I thought in this country that we sentenced individuals, not crimes. I thought courts imposed the sentences, not lawmakers miles away in Washington...It seemed utterly un-American to me then and it does today," said Stewart. (0:17)
