The Congressman is right. As a 20+ year veteran air traffic controller, I can tell you from personal experience that the FAA is imploding. Safety has definitely taken a back seat. They have completely lost their focus and the nation is now beginning to experience the results of that lack of focus. Just wait until another 20% of veteran controllers retire in the next year and are replaced by rookie controllers whose pay has been cut by 30% and who were hired based on the last number of their ssn. Controller (the people who are actually separating airplanes and saving lives on an hourly basis) pay has either been frozen or drastically reduced since 2005 while all management personnel continue to pat them selves on the back and give themselves yearly raises. I am a lifelong Republican but will probably vote Democrat this year.
