U.S. only gets health care right “about half the time”

Elizabeth McGlynn, Ph.D, associate director of RAND Health and distinguished chair in health quality, says that “many people say the United States has the best health care system in the world” but that she and her colleagues published a study that found that “on average, American adults received just 55 percent of recommend care for leading causes of death and disability.” She says that “we spend more than two trillion dollars annually on health care, and we get it right about half the time.” She says "we can, and should, do better." Sen. Baucus on health care: “people paying more, and getting less”

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) says at a hearing on rising costs and low quality in health care that the U.S. spends more than two trillion dollars on health care, but that 47 million Americans are uninsured. He says that one out of every six Americans do not have access to health care, except in “overcrowded emergency rooms.” He says that the trends are heading in the wrong direction, that the number of uninsured grows each year, and that the cost of insurance increases faster than both the economy and wages. He also says that the quality of care being provided is “not as high as it should be.” (0:54)

New survey shows Clinton is favored among registered nurses

Beth Ulrich, registered nurse and senior vice president of Nursing Economics, says that her survey results indicate that Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) received the most favorable ratings by participating RNs on issues related to health care. She also noted that 31 percent of the total vote was comprised of participants who either “don’t know” or don’t believe that any candidate “has the right answer” to solve the nursing shortage in relation to health care reform.
